Book Review: The Paladin by J.M. Storin

The Paladin – J.M. Storin

*Warning – may contain spoilers*

Author: J.M. Storin
Publisher: Jessica Storin
First published: 2016
Cover: Paperback

Pages: 308

Blurb:    Briana Mathias is a Hunter, or at least she used to be, and she carries a secret – a powerful, one-of-a-kind stone that makes her invincible.
After a ruthless and sinister Empire discovers her secret, they steal the stone away from her. In the wrong hands, this stone could be the demise of the world as she knows it and the rise of a much darker future.
Briana will stop at nothing to get back what belongs to her, and along the way she will meet friends, enemies, and discover a truth she never knew existed.

History of my copy: I’ve been following Jessie on Instagram for a few months now, at least, and I soon discovered that she was releasing her first book, The Paladin, at the beginning of April. After realising that she had a link to the first chapter in her bio (available here - go take a look!), I just had to check it out! And I loved it! I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the book. I had to wait a little while though, due to a card problem, but I eventually got it and am so glad I did!

I was pleasantly surprised by just how unique this book feels. From the characters through to the plot, everything felt different and fresh. Yes, it’s a fantasy book, and you can identify similarities here and there, as with every book, but I really love the idea of all the individual tribes having a genetic advantage to their respective ‘powers’.

Plot: The reader follows Briana, the black sheep in the Healer tribe after her own tribe, the Hunters, was destroyed by the Empire years ago. Another thing that makes Briana unique is her possession of the Perennial Stone, which makes the wearer invincible. She journeys across her land, through unknown areas as she approaches the home of the Reaper tribe and the Empire to retrieve what is rightfully hers. Throughout her travels, she meets a variety of people and creatures, both friends and foes from the Illuminator Caellum to the tree-like tribe, the Forblings.

Setting: One thing I particularly love about this book is its setting. I love the forest – it gives that fairy-tale feel whilst also having that essence of mystery and unexpected obstacles. Storin has a real talent at keeping the setting and plot interesting and page-turning, descriptive without waffling on. I really love her style of writing!

Characters: Briana has instantly made her way to my list of favourite protagonists of all time. She feels so human! She is talented as a Hunter, speedy and agile, and powerful when it came to trying Caellum’s electricity power but, at the same time, you can see her flaws, especially when it comes to protecting those she cares about. I also love the fact that, although she’s alone and completely out of place in the Healer tribe, she doesn’t go on and on about it, or complain about it like many characters in her position would do; she just seems to accept it and get on with her life!
               Another main character is Caellum from the Illuminator tribe, which has also been destroyed. We don’t learn much about him in The Paladin, but he is a good, trustworthy friend who compliments and contrasts Briana well. Also, where is Viessa?? I can’t wait for them to find her; she was such a funny character!
               Yet another character I’m particularly intrigued by is Draegan and the Reapers. Whilst we see a lot of the Reapers, we don’t hear much about Draegan as he is a mystery even to those who live in the world in The Paladin. I imagine that we will hear much more about him and his rise to power in the next book.

To read or not to read: Read. This is one of my favourite books I’ve read this year and I have nothing but hope for the sequel; I need it now! Plus, I desperately want to know what happens to that person Briana finds in the dungeon of Draegan’s castle. I also predict an epic battle may be coming up! So, if you want to know what it is I’m so in love with and hyped about, go check the book out!

One thing I would love to see in the next book is either a map of the forest (I’m obsessed with maps in books okay) or even an overview of all the different tribes and their powers!

Bullet Journals

I will happily admit that I am a very organised person. Sure, I wouldn't say I'm obsessively organised, but if it needs to be planned, I'll happily plan it. Glance at my desk and you'll find lists scrawled onto scrap paper, I have a white board to keep track of school work, and if you're planning an event, I need a full schedule at least 1 week in advance.

Okay, so maybe I am slightly obsessed with being organised.

About a year or so ago my Dad re-introduced me to the wonder that is Microsoft OneNote. I say 're-introduced' because there had been a few previous, failed attempts. At the time, I just didn't really have a use for it. School work was simple and straight forward and I didn't do any other things that needed scheduling, like running this blog and my Instagram. A-levels changed that though, and I quickly fell in love with OneNote, finding it easy to use and fantastic at keeping track of the work that needs to be done. However, one thing I miss is the personalised, handwritten touch of keeping a journal, and the app is too clunky to make it easy to use on my phone when I'm out.

So, after the occasional scroll through the #BulletJournal tag, and my interest in the idea blossoming deep inside me, I have bitten the bullet (apologies for the pun) and decided to start my own Bullet Journal. I'm not a hugely artsy person, but I love doodling, being organised, and writing things by hand so this is a new adventure I am really excited to start!

I'm planning to start mine in May (ahhh those few days are going to drag!) so that I start at the beginning of a month, otherwise it will drive me mad!

Do you have any tips and tricks for beginners like me? I'd love to hear from you, and even read any articles/look at any photo you have!

#SundaySeven (24/04/16)

So welcome to the 8th #SundaySeven post! (If my maths is correct!) Time is flying by rapidly fast, which means that exams are approaching. However, on the bright side, summer is also arriving, which means endless days of reading!
This week, bookstagram was full of outside, sunny Spring photos that brightened up my feed. In fact, a few sunny photos even made their way into this week's top seven!
I also hit a pretty big (to me) milestone on my own Instagram this week. One of my photos exceeded 100 likes and is actually currently at 126. Isn't it funny how such an unexpected photo ends up as your most liked?

1.
@lucysbookshelf

First places goes to Lucy! I've recently discovered her account, and I am so in love with it! Her photos are stunning, and she totally deserves more followers than she has. I haven't read these books, but I just am so in love with the picture. I love nature-y outside photos, and I really like Lucy's simple idea of taking a snap of some books on a tree stump but it has come out wonderfully! Photos like this make me so excited for summer, when I can actually go out and enjoy the sunshine.

2.
@bookish_mai

Another #SundaySeven newcomer this week is the lovely Mai! This photo is absolutely beautifully stunning! I love the colour, and the blurred background, and that drink looks so yummy. I don't really know how to put it into words; this picture just strikes me with how outstanding it is.

3.
@demmi_writist

And here we have Demmi for the 4th (I think) time! Seriously though, a quick glance at her fantastic account explains why she is a frequent bookstagrammer in the top seven. This photo is very similar to the one that topped the list a fortnight ago. The reason why I love it so much is how the notes look as if they have just fallen off the cover of the book and the colour scheme is so pretty!

4.
@myfictionalbubble

Although often making it to the shortlist, we welcome yet another lovely account to the #SundaySeven club. I have to admit that I have never read The Jungle Book, or watched the animated film (or the new one just released) but this photo makes me really want too! I love how the decorative lettering of 'April' goes with the bookcover, and the addition of the matching coloured pencils just adds to this photo, making it extra special.

5.
@sobookinggood

Tracey's 5th feature, wow! I think it's clear that she is definitely one of my favourite bookish accounts. Although, is it really surprising? I'm jealous; why do my bookish rainbows never look as outstanding as this?! Honestly, such a simple picture of just a book rainbow and matching pencils, but it's just so bright and colourful and beautiful! I may have to take some inspiration from this one.

6.
@thxboywthebooks

Another account that often makes the shortlist but never the final cut, I'm so glad Maxi finally got his chance to shine! His most recent theme is collections of books that are all the same colour and damn, they look fantastic! As you can see, this one goes for greens and browns, two of my least favourite colours, but he has managed to make me love them!

7.
@emceive

And to wrap up this week, we have this sunny little number from Emily! (Hey look, another week without Harry Potter too! In fact, a whole week of books I haven't read!) Simple yet stunning. As I said before, I'm really loving the sunny vibe that is now showing through with bookstagram, and I can't wait to snap some sunny photos of my own! The cover of this book is amazing, and I really love how the dark cover contradicts the bright background.

Thankyou for reading, and thanks to all the bookstagram accounts (both those featured, and the countless others I poured through in order to decide on my seven).

None of these photos are mine, and I have credited the account and notified them that I am using their image. Occasionally, it is known for accounts to repost photos without crediting the original owner. I do not support this. All photos are, to my knowledge, original to the accounts credited. If not, I will happily amend and assist in reporting accounts that are stealing photos. (To the accounts featured: I am not suggesting this applies to you, I am merely covering myself. This paragraph shall feature on all #SundaySeven posts in the rare and unfortunate case problems may occur.)

#SundaySeven (17/04/16)

I know it's very late this week, but better late than never right?
There have been some really amazing photos this week, which is partially why it took me so long to get this post up. I've also been doing a lot more school work, which is also why it took so long.
But before I go and watch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. I better get this post up!

1.
@mylibrary__

First place this week goes to one of my favourite accounts and someone who tags me in loads of photos, which is brilliant because I love book tags! This photo is quite a simple one, but simple can often mean absolutely stunning. I love the page background, which I'm sure I've mentioned before, but I also love the colour of the photo and that book cover is gorgeous!

2.
@book_lovers_15

This account hasn't been featured since the first week, but has made a comeback with this lovely photo of The One, a review of which can be found on this blog. I love the setting of this one, with the trees reflected beautifully on the lake. Plus the covers of Cass' books are so pretty too!

3.
@ash.reads

Ever since starting #SundaySeven, I have been waiting for Ashley to make the top seven. Not only is her account one of my absolute favourites, she is one of the nicest people I have met since joining bookstagram! A review of Throne of Glass is also up on this blog and, although the book disappointed me, this photo certainly doesn't! I just love the colours and that necklace is so pretty.
4.
@demmi_writist

Unsurprisingly, here we have Demmi's third feature and many of her other photos made it to this week's shortlist too. All of her photos are just so colourful and eye-catching! Two things really made this one for me. One is the bookmark. I love adult colouring, and I love the idea of colouring bookmarks! The colours chosen are so bright and could lighten up even the most fullest of days. The other thing I love are the book covers; I need to buy those books!

5.
@thehufflepuffle

I clearly cannot get enough of Lindsay's account. Third week in a row, and she featured last week twice! Her photos are always so beautifully cluttered and so stylishly done. Zodiac has totally made its way onto my TBR now just because of this photo. I really wish I could take photos as amazing as this!

6.
@sobookinggood

This photo is Tracey's fourth feature, wow! That's more than half the posts! Whenever I even try to go outside, I never get gorgeous photos like this. Maybe I'm just unlucky, but Tracey clearly isn't! I love the way the glare of the sun is in the top of the photo, and I just love the tree that the book is nestled in. It's such a lovely photo; it really makes me want it to be Summer!

7.
@conireads

What's this? A week without Harry Potter? Wow! Instead I have this lovely photo from one of my new found accounts. I'm such a dog person and, although not a really planned out photo like those above, I will stop and always love any photos featuring your reading buddies! Plus the book cover is pretty intriguing too!

Book Review: The Poisoned Chalice by Simon Forward

The Poisoned Chalice – Simon Forward

*Warning – may contain spoilers*

Author: Simon Forward
Publisher: Bantam Books
First published: 2009
Cover: Hardcover, signed by Bradley James and Angel Coulby

Pages: 194
Blurb:    The sorceress Nimueh is weaving a spell with powerful dark magic and her target is Merlin! Prince Arthur tries to help, but it seems he may be walking into a trap…

History of my copy: I got all the BBC Merlin books for Christmas a few years back and I’m slowly making my way through them all. They only cost me around £2.80 each. However, unknown to me (and probably the seller), my copy of this book has been signed by the actor and actress that plays Arthur and Gwen! It wasn’t until I opened it that I noticed! Not a bad bargain, if I do say so myself.

As for Merlin the TV show, I hated it when it first appeared on our screens back in 2008. I’ve always been a fan of Arthurian legend, and the show was so far off from the original myths that it just irked me. However, a few years ago, I tried again and became hooked! I binged the show and fell so in love with it. Since then, I have been a huge fan.

Plot: As you can probably tell, this book is a retelling of series 1 episode 4 of the BBC TV show Merlin. We, as the reader, follow Merlin and Arthur as King Bayard and the Mercians come to visit Camelot to sign a peace treaty. However, unknown to all, evil sorceress Nimueh is disguised as a serving girl and succeeds in poisoning Merlin. Arthur goes on a quest to find the antidote yet nearly dies in the process. However, as is their destiny, both Merlin and Arthur live to see another day.
         Although held back by the fact the book is limited to the story of the TV episode with the same name, and thus the ending is known, I really enjoy the extra information, especially on the thoughts and feelings of the characters that the books provide.

Setting: Descriptions of settings really leave something to be desired in this book. Luckily, just like the majority of readers of this book, I have seen the episode countless times so I could heavily rely on that to picture what was going on. Without having watched the TV episode, I feel as if this book really wouldn’t do much for someone.

Characters: Possibly my favourite aspect of these books, besides being able to delve into the world of Camelot in a different way, is the development of characters! TV shows are rather limited to being able to display the deep, inner thoughts of characters, especially as too many monologues just look silly. These books allow the fans to truly get a sense of Arthur’s loyalty to Merlin, Gwen’s friendship, Gaius’ father-ness and just how cruel Uther can truly be. Character development is, without a doubt, a highlight of both the books and TV show and it’s really interesting to see how the cocky Prince Arthur becomes the King he is destined to be.
                And, let’s not forget that this story had the wonderful line “That’s disgusting. You should be ashamed of yourself – you’re old enough to be her grandfather!” aimed at Gaius and Gwen. That is followed by Gwen kissing Merlin – how sweet! As the series developed, I really did miss the cute, innocent moments of the young adults from series 1.

To read or not to read: Read. Although The Poisoned Chalice was one of my least favourite series 1 episodes, I really enjoyed this book. I think that the episode lacked the bond between Arthur and Merlin that the book displays wonderfully. New and old fans alike will love this retelling.

Book Review: Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan

Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth – Rick Riordan

*Warning – may contain spoilers*

Author: Rick Riordan
Publisher: Puffin Books
First published: 2008
Cover: Paperback
Pages: 342

Blurb:  Honestly, blowing up another school was the last thing I wanted to do.
As the son of a Greek god, I’ve had my share of near-death disaster – and now my arch enemy Luke wants to invade our camp via an ancient labyrinth.
If he succeeds, thousands of bloodthirsty monsters will attack. So it’s goodbye sunshine, hello darkness as four of us descend into the terrifying underground and beyond…

History of my copy: The whole Percy Jackson series, and in fact all of Riordan’s other books, have been sitting on my TBR list for a long time. I slowly picked up the first three in the series, although they then spent an even longer time sitting unread on my shelf at home. I finally got the Battle of the Labyrinth and the last book of the series on AS results day last year.

I’ve actually been reading this book on and off for a few months now. I got stuck in a rut where Riordan’s writing style, as iconic and different to anything I’ve ever read before, started to bother me. As I’m now 18, it felt a little too kiddy, and almost as if he couldn’t write any differently. However, Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer (review here) got me out of that because, although still written similarly, you could tell it was narrated by an older character, and I once more fell in love with the Percy-ness of the Percy Jackson series.

Plot: In the fourth instalment of the series, we see Percy, Annabeth, Tyson and Grover enter the Labyrinth, the infamous Greek structure known for its story involving Ariadne and the Minotaur. They’re searching for Daedalus and, with the help of mortal Rachel, they discover he isn’t quite who they expected him to be. A story about a maze also wouldn’t be complete without Grover finally achieving his goal; finding Pan! I was so happy for him when that happened!
         True to the Labyrinth itself, this book is full of unexpected twists and turns and shocking revelations, but you’ll have to find out all of them yourself! Oh, and there’s a pretty awesome battle scene.

Setting: As you have probably guessed, a whole lot of this book takes place in the Labyrinth, but it’s a lot more interesting than that. As they navigate the maze, they come across numerous surprising places. Anyone who has read any Riordan book will know that setting isn’t perhaps his strongest point, especially in this series as Percy, rather stereotypically for a fourteen-year-old boy, kind of focuses on just the weird parts of the rooms he walks into. But there’s definitely enough for you to know what’s going on and where!

Characters: One thing I love about books that follow children/teens over a few years is how they grow and develop, and how their views on people and topics change. Of course, adult’s also change over books, I’m not denying that but as your teenage years are pretty important, especially in terms of developing social skills, there’s just an intimacy and love of watching them grow and change.
                I can’t talk about Percy, without talking about Annabeth. These two! These two just make me miss all the guy best friends I have had and lost, because there’s something so great about those friendships – you can say anything and not have to worry about the consequences! However, their relationship takes a slightly different turn in this book as they finally share a kiss! Plus, you can just feel Annabeth’s jealousy of Rachel and Percy’s of Luke just oozing out of the pages.
                Tyson, my sweet, precious Cyclops! (Yes, you heard that right!) I don’t really know why, but I just adore Tyson so much. I think it may be because he reminds me of my own brother. And by that, I don’t mean that my brother has one eye (although he’s certainly tall enough and built like a cyclops). To me, Tyson always seemed a little simple and straight to the point, which is why he reminds me of my brother. So I guess I just feel like I can relate to Percy on that point.
                Not a favourite character of mine, but dear lord my heart broke a little for Clarisse in this book! And Dionysus did something nice to her, what?! And he was sad about the death of his son, man that really got to me too.
                But, as for a characters I would like to be even more developed: Nico and Luke! I assume they will be major roles in the next book, and I know that Nico has just arrived to talk with Percy at the end of this one, but I need to know all that back story now!

Actually, whilst I’m on the topic of the end of this book, it was probably actually my favourite part. Poseidon meeting Paul; Paul finding out that Tyson is Percy’s brother (and Sally’s quick explanation that he isn’t her child); Poseidon just disappearing. Gah, I want more Percy, Poseidon, Paul and Sally scenes please!

To read or not to read: Read. Despite my review, this book is actually my least favourite of the Percy Jackson series. It was good, and a must read to continue with the series, but I often felt it just lacked something. However, the end of the book was much better than the first, and it did pick up, but it just didn’t do much for me. I am hoping the last book makes up for it!

#SundaySeven (10/04/16)

I've not been on Instagram much this week as I've been doing a lot of school work. With A-level exams rapidly approaching, and the pressure for me to do well enough to get into med school, I'm realising that I need to work a lot more. However, I shall continue to try and keep doing #SundaySeven and try to stay relatively active.
I am also looking for someone to co-run this blog with me. Of course, things shall change so that it is less personal to me, but I would really love the input of someone else to help keep it active and to add something a little different! If you are interested, contact me by leaving a comment, or by messaging me through any social networking site I have this blog connected to. I think running a book blog with someone else, whilst getting to know them, would make things even more fun!
But enough waffling, now onto this week's top seven photos!

1.
@demmi_writist

I knew from the moment I saw this photo that it would be in my top seven, and very likely the top one. It's such a brilliant idea for a photo! Demmi has, unsurprisingly, featured before (a quick look at her photos will tell you why). But seriously, I love the genius idea behind this - so simple yet so awesome!

2.
@thenerdfiles

Would you look at what's been done here? Let's mix books, my one true love, with another of my favourite things, Once Upon a Time, and my love of Funko's! Unfortunately I'm still on season 2, especially since it's been dropped in England :( However, I am totally in love with the show! (And Colin O'Donaghue is so dreamy!) I just love how cute this photo is!

3.
@amirrorofinkandmadness

Unsurprisingly, I think about 7 photos from this stunning account made it to the shortlist this week! However, competition is tough and this was the one that made it. Anyone who has been following the Sunday Sevens know that I am a huge huge huge fan of the shadow world! The Shadowhunter's Codex is an awesome book, especially with the little notes form Jace, Clary and Simon (although it really reminds me of the Harry, Ron and Hermione notes in Fantastic Beasts). I love Izzy's necklace too!
4.
@booklover14

I cannot get enough of Eleni's account! Not only did she appear twice last week, this is now her fourth appearance in Sunday Seven. Is it any wonder why? I've nearly finished the Lunar Chronicles (I just have Winter left) and I am so hooked! I'm so glad it lived up to the hype bookstagram gave it. I particularly love this photo because of the cute little props that relate to the books. From the spanners for our favourite mechanic through to the glimpse of red fabric for Scarlet's hoody, it is all there! Anyone want to put any bets on Eleni appearing next week? Haha.

5.
@thehufflepuffle

Second week in a row for Lindsay, and this time she is here with a beautiful blue photo. I've never even heard of the book before, but this photo just makes me want to read it right now! I'm a fan of cluttered photos, as long as they match the book cover well, and Lindsay has pulled it off beautifully!

6.
@thehufflepuffle

And I've just realised that number 6 is Lindsay too, you go girl! Again with another book I haven't even heard of, the monochrome with the splashes of red just make this photo so gorgeous. How on earth do you do it? I totally need some tips from you, I love your account!

7.
@mybookbliss

As you probably know by now, a week is rarely ever complete without a dash of Potter. This week we welcome back Morgan to #SundaySeven after her absence from last week's selection. I love the creature theme of this photo, but how it hasn't been overdone. I also love the page background, but I could never pull apart a book to do that!

Sunday 3 April 2016

#SundaySeven (03/04/16)

I've been very busy this week with some family from Cambridge being down and catching up on school work. For those of you who follow me on Instagram, you'll have seen that I've been to Tintagel (one of my favourite places) and to Geevor. I've also been busy with school work, which is why this post is a lot later than usual.

1.
@book.lover14

Eleni has featured before and, unsurprisingly when you look at her photos, loads of hers made it to my shortlist this week. In fact, I love this photo so much, it actually makes me wish I had enjoyed the book a lot more. I just love the collection of items that match the book's theme and colours and the way it is just so fantastically done.

2.
@thehufflepuffle

April first is, of course, April Fools Day and Lindsay posted this snap of her joke tbr. But look how beautiful that edition is! I totally want! As you may have noticed, I love photos full of little, random objects that compliment it. I just love the cards as well! I wonder if they have a meaning, or if they were just chosen at random. I love her account, and her more recent photo of The Paladin was in my shortlist for this week too!

3.
@jennifermadero

I know, I know, I had a Lady Midnight spam a few weeks ago, but I couldn't resist choosing this beautiful photo of Jennifer's! For someone who hasn't read the book, the accessories are spot on! The jewellery makes me think of the Fair Folk and Mark and Kieran, and the sea shells tie in with the LA beach that the institute is near (and let's not forget that scene that occurred on the beach). Also, I do love the idea of using book pages as a background!

4.
@lechoixdesofie

Similar to my second choice last week, I still clearly have a thing for rainbow books and doodles. My rainbow book tags always look awful, but ones like Sofie's are stunning! I may have to take some inspiration from this next time. Rainbow book photos always just make me 'aw'.

5.
@book.lover14

Twice in one week! Wow Eleni, your photos really are stunning this week! But how could I ignore this photo? (And those black page edges!) The only thing I love more than rainbows or accessories in a photo is more books! I also love the plant that's currently featuring in most of her photos. And, well, I can't help but notice Lady Midnight in the corner!

6.
@jmstorinbooks

Of course, it's not a #KatticusSundaySeven without a little of my Harry Potter love. Or, in this case, a lot as the next photo is also Potter themed. I love the pop, I love the socks, I love the notebook, I love the photo! Even though I'm a Hufflepuff, I love all the red and am totally in love with this cute little photo. Also, Jessica is releasing her book The Paladin this week!! Totally going to get my hands on it when I have a little more money.

7.
@book.belle

And, of course, some Potter love to wrap up this post. I love how this photo is almost symmetrical, but not quite. I also love the little Potter items and the way they are arranged around the books. It's so organised yet so cute! (And I'm a huge funko fan, so bonus points there!)
